So I we were at Currumbin for my dad’s birthday, picnic, boules, French cricket and a swim/snorkel/surf. Though the surf was crowded as I managed to get a few nice long rides (the alley or shark alley at Currumbin is a superb point break). I was on the inside with the pig (my 50 year old 8ft mal) and I got a few very nice 2-4ft waves. I got on em half way down (the take off near the rocks was a bit hairy and fast) and surfed em til the next beach where they’d close out or die out. Bottoms turns, cut backs, hang five, almost a hang ten…ahhhhhhh longboards!

so i bought me a pair of running shoes the other day (my touch-footy
shoes which i'd been running in are almost 10 years old...). they
offer adequate support, they're light and they fit. the bonus was
that i got 'em at 65% off...bargain!! once they're broken in (went
for 40mins the other day, my legs were fine but my feet were a
little sore) i'll be able to knock back some k's...should be great
for my riding fitness.

so we (myself, mum, dad, nome and adam) left burleigh heads at 6:15
am and headed for mount warning (named like that by captain cook
cause it warns sailors to watch out for reefs or something...). we
started the "climb" (a walk assisted by chains at the top) at 7:20
and were back down for a picnic at 11:30. the view from the top
wasn't crash hot due to cloud and mist but it was well worth it. the
walk up is in beaut rainforest so twas delightful! back to burleigh
for some marking (for school) and then for a leisurely surf in 2ft
right-handers while the sun was setting...ahhhhhhhhh warm queensland
holidays by the beach... very relaxing! :)

van tales

so i took the van in for a service...$120 (which is pretty good), i also needed to change the brake rotors and pads (which i could've done myself for $300)...$350 (i figure i'd rather pay $50 extra for pros to do it and save my energy, time and frustration...). so there you go, hopefully after this it'll be good for a couple of months until rego comes around... ahhhhhhhhhhhhh a never ending story. the biggets problem is that they're getting rid of all leaded petrol...what next?

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the serenety...

so i borrowed dorge (my cous)'s nimbus (space wagon) and headed to wollombi. from there it was 60kms on dirt track, to a remote and beautiful homestead in the wollomi national park. no tv, no phone, no mobile coverage, nothing but great views, walks, hills and trees. we (a few teachers, their families and myself) were to check out some walks for the Duke Of Edinburgh award for some of our students later this year. fantastic! walked up mt Yengo again, wow... so we organised a 3 day walk for 'em with water drops where needed. what a place! def a great place to get some R+R and solitude... :)

up on da gold coast

so heather drove me to the airport on a beautiful rainy newcastle morning (very grey and wet) and we had a great cup of java on a bench outside. after a good wee chat i hopped on da plane and an hour later i was sayin g'day to me dad at coolangatta airport... the swell looked pretty big from the plane and all the epic spots are working... i hope it stays that way and that the crowds are nonexistent...

Happy 1000th SGR!!

That’s right the very popular SGR site (http://sandgateroad.blogspot.com) has had its 1000th visitor! In celebration Tom (my flatmate and site publisher extraordinaire) has printed a collection of writings from the site. A perfect toilet read if you have a comfortable seat! J

I didn’t know him personally, I never heard him speak and I didn’t follow his life and times. But it has to be said that in 27 years of reign Pope John Paul II did a good job. It’s weird, he started the year I was born… may the Catholic Church find a replacement as good as he was.
