When walking is faster than running…

I went for a wee run yesterday. As it always is round here, a wee run isn’t so wee, as you have to run straight uphill for quite a while. So I decided to head up to the mountain above camp, to see how long it would take me to get to the foot of it (the record to get to the top is 1h35 or thereabouts). It’s only a few km in distance but it’s about 1500m vertical gain… so I decided to head up and run on the road/“flat” sections and walk the steep/track ones. I ended up walking most of the way up, at a brisk pace, and realised that (unless you’re super fit) walking is quicker than running, as sustaining a run up steeeeeeep terrain is not possible and means longer recovery time. I got to the foot of the “mountain” (the last, steep walk/climb part) in 1h15 going the long way round, so I think I’m on the money for a good time once the snow melts on the steep sections and makes a summit ascent possible in joggers and shorts…
