Summer in spring?
This is my speedo on Saturday.
However, I hardly think that 41 degrees is spring weather…and yet that is what my speedo was reading today (Sunday), during the club championship race out at Killi, at the foot of sugarloaf. What a hot one! To make things worse, the track was gruelling. It basically went up one of the downhill race tracks for about 5 minutes (not that I was counting, but it seemed like it took 10, so it was probably 5!) then back down the other side. The downhill section (the one we rode down) was scary: steep, dusty, rocky, rutted fire-road. I dunno how I didn’t snap myself or my bike (especially on my first lap when, going too fast, I had to take a few nasty stair type drops having just missed a good line and going too fast to do anything about it. I thought fer sure I’d busted a tyre, a wheel, a spoke, the frame, the suspension or something due to the noise, but as soon as I got a chance I checked my bike and all was sweet). I pushed pretty hard for the 3 laps, sticking in front for most of it. On the last pinch climb of the 7.5km track (when I thought I had it in the bag) a stealth rider came from nowhere to snatch the victory from me. still, I was happy to finish 2nd in B grade, especially since I’d ridden 18kms to get to the race in the first place.
I’d also like to take the opportunity to thank Tezza for suggesting a ride in the shady glenrock on Sat, rather than a ride up around sugarloaf, which I had planned. I was going to do a 60-100km training ride up and around sugarloaf on sat, but ended up doing a 40km one with Tez in glenrock (which was a much better idea due to the 31-degrees-in-the-shade heat and the exposure to the sun of the sugarloaf range vs the beach-side and shady glenrock option). Cheers Tezza, thanks for the suggestion and for the company.
