warning, this next post is pretty full-on and graffic, so don't read it if you're eating or are easily grossed out by your imagination...
i was at work on sat night, just writing up the books at about 11pm when all young people are in bed(kinda summerising the shift for each young person) when one of the girls, the one who is seriously at risk from herself, cut herself pretty deep with a bit of broken glass from a perfume bottle (stolen from the beauty room earlier that day by herself or another resident). staff rushed in to help her (she had buzzed us) and clean up the wounds, stop the bleeding and "mop up". i raced down to get some bandages, kinda knowing they would be too small...
the doctor was called and he came pretty quickly (half hour??). he put some strapping (like stiches) on her arm and said she would need to get it stiched up the next day ASAP as the tendons were exposed and this may affect the mouvements of the hand. the doctor was only walking down the stairs when she re-opened them in the bathroom with whatever she could find. so he came back up and staff cleaned her up and got her settled and patched her up again. i got a mop and dettol filled bucket to clean the bathroom. smokearoonies...
having seen the blood on the team leader's shoes i knew there'd be a bit around and we needed to get the bathroom in order cause other kids were asking to use it.
i won't go into further detail but it took about ten minutes of hard work and was pretty disgusting, not something i'd necessarily like to see again, but it's good to know i was able to deal with it. after spraying and scrubbing the walls and floor the place was spotless and stinking of dettol.
she was then watched til she went to sleep. the next day she was up at 8:30, quite early considering it was sunday and since she's been up so late (2am??) and was so tired. she wanted to show me her cuts abd she ripped the bandages off her arm...yuck! so we got her to put some more on, and she was taken to hospital a few hours later. 12 stiches (would've been more but the hospital ran out of stringy stuff...what's going on?? what kind of hospital is that??!).
since then she's been up and down but she is now on a 1-1 and there is an extra person on at night just to watch her.
talk about a stressful and trying time!
